Filament winding

Filament winding is easiest onto a cylindrical mandrel, so that this method is used mainly for making pipes or other circular sections. Fibre tows from spools are coated in resin on their way to the mandrel. As the mandrel rotates the fibres are laid around it, usually at an angle to the axis of rotation. Several layers can be laid on top of one another at alternating angles. Initial costs for a mandrel and its associated driving motor, together with the feed mechanism for the tows, will be considerable. However, repeat products require only material and operational costs. If a good outer surface finish is required additional processing will be required.
