The purposes of Gel coats are:

  • Increased durability
  • Protective coating from environmental effects
  • Create smooth surface finish

Gel coats are commonly based on isophthalic acid type resins and are available in brush and spray forms. They are generally applied to a 0.5mm thickness. If the layer of gel coat is too thin, the cure is incomplete and the fibres will be visible in the surface (not aesthetic). A layer that is too thick may result in cracking and crazing.
