An alternative, simpler method to measure the fibre volume fraction is to calculate it based on certain known information about the composite. The relationship between laminate thickness and fibre volume can be determined knowing the fibre areal weight and fibre density. The thickness of the laminate with a known number of plies is measured. The fibre volume fraction is measured using the following equation:

This method is only applicable to laminated composites as a distinct number of plies must be identified.
