ASTM E 1321, known as the LIFT test, determines both ignition temperature and flame spread velocity. A radiant heat source is placed at 75° to the specimen. The ignition specimen is 150mm and is exposed to a uniform heat flux. The ignition times for different quantities of heat flux are determined. The flame spread test uses a (150 x 800 mm) specimen with a graduated heat flux along its length. The specimens are preheated for a time. The flame spread rate on the sample as a function of heat flux is then recorded.
