In the life factor approach to durability, additional fatigue cycles are applied to achieve the desired level of reliability. The duration of the test is determined from the required reliability, the scatter of the data and the number of specimens tested. A common approach is for 90% probability that the structural life exceeds the design lifetime, with 95% confidence. Weibull shape parameters are used to assure equal reliability.
