Polyurethane resins are formed by the reaction of polyols with isocyanates and it is the isocyanates that pose a significant hazard, as they are highly toxic. The eyes, skin and respiratory tract may all be irritated by exposure to isocyanate vapour and if severe can lead to bronchitis and pulmonary edema. If the skin has prolonged contact with the resin then blisters, redness and swelling can occur.
