An alternative ultrasonic method that can be used in-the-field uses Lamb wave dispersion measurements to quantify axial and flexural stiffness. Lamb waves propagate in a flexural mode at wavelengths of the order of structural thickness. Low frequencies are required for these ultrasonic waves and changes in velocity as a function of frequency use analysis to identify the wave dispersion related to bending and tension stiffness.
