Residue from the shredding technique can be considered as a substitute or supplement for fossil fuel as it has similar properties to low grade coal. The products could be mixed with other resins to form briquettes with the appearance of coal. The shredded residues can be burnt to form steam if burnt in pure oxygen, although the use of pure oxygen has a cost and safety implication. One advantage of incineration for energy recovery is that mixed plastics, and even mixed materials can be used. These can also include composite removed after their use in-service depending on the nature of the contamination.
